SHARING YOUR OWN CELEBRATIONS

Sharing your own celebrations:

100 Celebrations, 1000 Prayers

When you look at the world around you,

What do you care about?

What would you share?

What would you celebrate?

What moments of stillness do you find?

At the heart of the CelebrationEarth! project is hope. The hope that we, as individuals, as small groups, or as bigger organisations can make a difference. The hope that we can help both the world around us and each other and that, quietly, people are already making a difference. This work is often less dramatic than the disaster movie reportage of much environmental reporting, but slowly, gently, people are changing the world.

CelebrationEarth! had been working towards a large gathering at St Albans Cathedral in September 2020, which we were sadly forced to cancel due to Covid-19, although we are delighted that a series of CelebrationEarth! shorts, highlighting the amazing work being done by so many people, will be aunched at the global EarthX platform from September 22.

But to celebrate the world around us, to acknowledge our connections to that world, does not belong to just one initiative or just one event. We can all celebrate the earth beneath our feet, the air that fills our lungs, the inspirations that move us. At CelebrationEarth!, we encourage everyone to find their own celebrations and to share your action, your story, your hope.

We have two new initiatives germinating now:

100 Celebrations (100C) invites groups (or individuals) to create their own events that will share a sense of excitement and wonder at the world around us

1000 Prayers (1000P) asks individuals to share either the path they use to step perhaps just for a moment into a space of peace and reflection with the natural world or to share some of the results of that contemplation

(scroll down to find out more)

Both of these projects are rooted in you:  as individuals and as groups, we will help share your activities and hope other people find new inspirations through your word – a new idea for a public event, for a community celebration or a service perhaps or a new opportunity for a still moment in nature

100 CELEBRATIONS

create your own celebration

When you look at the world around you,

  • What do you care about?

  • What would you share?

  • What would you celebrate?

Why not organise your own Earth celebration? You might take an existing event and build on that. You might decide to plan a new event to share an idea, a place or an activity with other people. Ideas, suggestions and examples of such celebrations will follow on our blog.

To transform an event from a straightforward activity like tree planting, or bird watching, or a garden open day, or even a religious ceremony into a celebration, we would suggest you look for ways of incorporating

  • time for people reflect upon what they are doing and why this matters to them

  • an opportunity to share those feelings with others if they want to

  •  a chance to look ahead, shaping an idea of what they would like to do next

If you organise your own earth celebration please let us know. We will list those that we can, encouraging people to attend (if that’s what you want), sharing the news of your existing work and growing plans, and contributing to a wider sense of how people across the country are looking at the world around them and reminding each other, sharing with each other, the wonder of the world we live in – building 100 Celebrations.

Covid-19: we know that with the current situation events may be planned and then have to postpone or more online or operate with very reduced numbers. While that might change what we can do or how we do it, it need not prevent an event becoming a Celebration!

1000 PRAYERS

share your own moments of stillness in nature

When you look at the world around you,

  • what do you care about?

  • what moment of reflection would you share?

  • what stillness would you celebrate?

A prayer can be many things: a request for help, a plea, an intercession. It might be a celebration, an invocation an appreciation of wonder, a moment of stillness and connection. It might be all of these, or something else again

At CelebrationEarth!, our 1000 Prayers initiative turns to those personal moment of stillness and connection. We invite you as individuals and as groups to look at your relationships with the world around us and (hopefully) to find wonder and joy in that sense of connection to the natural world. We are convinced that an experience of wonder and belonging and love is a more enduring motivation for action than the fear and anger that often dominates environmental discussion

The 100 Celebrations  initiative draws together events scattered across the country where groups are invited to create their own celebrations of the world around them. 1000 Prayers is more personal. Here, we invite people to share with us their own moments of stillness and connection with the natural world

We use “Prayer” as an inclusive term. Our prayers include traditional prayers to God or your own expression of the Divine, but “prayers” might also be an activity that brings you a sense of stillness and connection, a dance, a song, a hymn, a chant, a yoga asana. We are looking for ways of finding those moments of peace and connection with the natural world

What can you do?

Will you share either the words or the process with us and with other people? We aim to gather 1000 prayers: 1000 moments of connection, expressions of diversity as rich as the life that surrounds us

We are looking for words: poems, prayers, songs or descriptions of activities. If you are not sure, just get in touch. If you have an idea but aren’t sure about what to say, we will try to help.

We do need to retain an editorial control and we will not publish material that is racist, sexist or otherwise discriminatory or offensive.

Initially, we will collect and display your Prayers here, but we might publish them as a manual for personal connection to the natural world. If this develops, we will contact you directly about publication personal
